“A chance to have a New Beginning.” That’s how Pastor John E. Blackmon Sr described his vision. His vision led to the formation of First New Birth Baptist Church. We are standing before a place born from prayer and a desire for renewal.

First New Birth Baptist Church started in a home. A small group of believers supported Pastor Blackmon’s ministry. They met for Bible study and prayer.

On September 27 1991 Pastor Blackmon shared his call to form a church. It was an answered prayer for a fresh start. Founding members included Pastor Blackmon Hattie C Blackmon and others.

The first official service happened at Baldwin Elementary School in Manassas Virginia. This was nine months after the group first gathered. That nine-month period mirrored the development of a new child. Thus the name “New Birth” was chosen.

The Northern Virginia Baptist Association recognized First New Birth Baptist Church. They confirmed its alignment with Missionary Baptist practices. An official recognition service took place at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

First New Birth Baptist Church sees itself as a place of new beginnings. The church embraces the words of Isaiah 43:18-19. “Remember ye not the former things Behold I will do a new thing”

Today First New Birth Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It offers Sunday School Sunday worship and Wednesday services. You can find them at 9212 Lee Ave Manassas VA. If you cannot attend in person you can join on Facebook Live.

First New Birth Baptist Church is not the only New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest Georgia is a megachurch. It has a rich history.

Founded in 1939 as Travelers Rest Baptist Church it later moved and changed its name. Eddie Long became pastor in 1987. Under his leadership the church grew significantly.

New Birth Stonecrest dedicated a new 6056-seat auditorium in 2001. The church hosted significant events. These include Dorinda Clark-Cole’s live recording. They also hosted Lisa Left Eye Lopes’ funeral.

The Stonecrest church opened branches in other locations. These included Charlotte North Carolina and Memphis Tennessee. Not all branches survived.

In 2006 New Birth Stonecrest hosted Coretta Scott King’s funeral. Four U.S. Presidents attended. In 2018 Jamal Bryant became senior pastor.

New Birth Stonecrest also faced controversies. These included investigations into Eddie Long’s compensation. There were also allegations of sexual impropriety.

In 2023 the church inaugurated a community medical clinic. This was in the church fitness center.

Both First New Birth Baptist Church and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church have unique stories. Each reflects faith community and new beginnings. They strive to serve their congregations and communities.

As we stand here let us reflect on the power of faith and community. Consider the impact of new beginnings. Remember the words of Isaiah. Let us embrace the possibility of renewal in our own lives.
