The building itself is impressive. It houses everything a young person needs. There’s an admissions area a medical facility and administrative offices. There’s also a theater a student commons and classrooms. Vocational training spaces help youth learn practical skills.
But the smart-aleck part is this. The design itself is innovative. It minimizes the feeling of confinement. Inwardly curved barriers with non-climb fabric replace metal fencing. The smaller residential units are designed to feel more like a home. The architects even aimed for a LEED Gold certification. Sustainability matters even in juvenile rehabilitation.
Dr Kenya Key played a vital role. She introduced the Power Source program. This group therapy uses evidence-based interventions. It works with youth at the deepest end of the juvenile justice system. The Maya Angelou Academy provides on-site educational programming. This school caters to students with varied needs and learning levels. It offers GED and SAT prep and college tours. The school also helps with academic placement and provides post-release support.
