New Beginnings Baptist Church acquired its building in 2009. The Pacific Grace Chinese Mennonite Brethren Church sold it to them. The previous owners wanted a neighborhood church to serve the broken people. They felt they couldn’t fulfill that mandate.
Founding pastor Joe Russell shared colorful accounts of the church’s history. He spoke about its development and First Nations connections during its 25th-anniversary celebration. Byron Grant took over many pulpit duties. Joel Wagler and Carmen Lali cast a vision for the future. They planned a restructuring for a fully Indigenous congregation. A new entity called New Beginnings Mission would work alongside the church. It would develop community programs. Some programs needed significant capital investment.
New Beginnings Baptist Church faced challenges early on. Their meeting place at a Salvation Army facility was needed for other purposes. They had no money. Christians in the Fraser Valley supported them. Ron Heppell, a farmer, encouraged church members to share their stories. These stories helped secure support for the building purchase.
Renovations followed. They accommodated programs like tutoring and counseling. These were especially geared toward single-parent families. Each summer, New Beginnings Baptist Church stages Praise in the Park. It is a giant all-day-Sunday festival across the street in Woodland Park. About 1000 people attend. There is ice cream and barbecued chicken from Fraser Valley farms. First Nations dancing and baptisms are featured. The day ends with an outdoor service. Strong gospel preaching is included. Attendees are invited to give their lives to Christ.
New Beginnings Baptist Church offers free Biblical-based counseling by appointment. There is also a weekly support group. It is for women dealing with abuse, grief, or pain. They operate a youth group. Social, recreational, and mentored activities take place on Fridays from 6 pm to 11 pm. Day camps for children ages five to 11 are available. Summer camps for children, youth, and families are held. Three-day retreats are offered for children and youth ages 11 to 18. Tutoring is available after school from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm Monday to Thursday. The New Beginnings Baptist Church provides a food bank service on Wednesdays from 1 pm to 3 pm. All are welcome to sign up. Enjoy a snack or coffee. Pick up donated food. They serve East Vancouver from Main Street to Boundary Road. The service area streches from Wall Street to East 49th Avenue.
Garett Alexee, an Aboriginal member, runs the free furniture and moving service. This is one of the church’s key practical programs.
