The New Apostolic Church began its journey in this region many years ago. Members initially gathered in homes for services. This fostered a close-knit community. As the congregation grew, the need for a dedicated space became apparent.
The New Apostolic Church District Six is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a place of belonging. It is a spiritual home for many.
In 1980 families moved into the Tafelsig neighborhood. This area is in the southern part of Cape Town. Divine services then took place in members’ homes starting in June of that year. Sunday School and choir practices also occurred there.
Existing congregations soon became too crowded. Negotiations then started with the Department of Education. The Church received permission to conduct services in school classrooms.
Apostle Noel Barnes and Bishop John Kriel dedicated two chapels in 1996. These chapels were houses purchased by the Church. They were altered to suit the requirements. These provided seating for about 500 members.
Even these church buildings soon became too cramped. Municipal authorities helped the Church purchase land. This was for the construction of a new large church.
Apostle Cecil van der Merwe officiated at the turning-of-the-sod ceremony. This took place on 18 January 1998. District Apostle Noel Barnes dedicated the new church one and a half years later. The dedication service occurred on 20 June 1999.
Due to limited ground space the church was built upward. The many seats required to house members influenced this decision. The design was innovative and the strategic planning was good. The building was constructed on columns. This provided parking underneath.
A double gallery and mezzanine floor are other features. Glass balustrades and the roof construction ensure clear visibility. The altar is visible from any position inside the church.
The nave has 3500 seats. The rooms on the mezzanine floor add another 500 seats. The mezzanine floor also features sanitary facilities. Four Sunday School rooms offer additional seating.
The New Apostolic Church truly is a church of superlatives. The Tafelsig church building is the largest in the world. It seats 4000 people. A huge emblem is cast into the roof.
The altar platform accommodates choirs or orchestras. It has been designed on two levels. Tafelsig also features a three-manual electric organ. A pipe section has been added to it. The pipes are integrated into the design of the altar area.
