The New Apostolic Church Bonteheuwel Central began its journey humbly. In the 1980s families from nearby areas like Athlone and Elsies River moved to Bonteheuwel. Services initially took place in members’ homes. Soon these homes overflowed with worshippers. The need for a larger space became clear. The church secured permission to use school classrooms for services. This makeshift arrangement worked for a while. Yet the congregation continued to grow.
By 1996 two chapels were dedicated. These were houses repurposed to accommodate the ever-expanding number of faithful. Even these larger spaces proved insufficient. The dream of a grand new church building began to take shape.
Thanks to cooperation with municipal authorities land was acquired. A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction in 1998. Just a year and a half later in 1999 the magnificent New Apostolic Church Bonteheuwel Central opened its doors. Its design is remarkable. It’s a testament to innovative planning. The building was designed to maximize space. It rises upwards rather than sprawling outwards. This clever design allows ample seating and even parking underneath.
The church boasts a double gallery and mezzanine floor. This ensures clear sightlines to the altar from every seat. There are 3500 seats in the main nave. An additional 500 seats are available in the mezzanine level’s Sunday school rooms. These rooms are used for youth events and ministerial services.
The altar itself is a special feature. It’s designed with two levels. This makes it easy to accommodate choirs and orchestras for performances. The church also has a remarkable three-manual electric organ with a pipe section.
