A sea captain’s faith planted the seed. The New Apostolic Church in Swakopmund stands before you a testament to that. Imagine Priest Haelblich a sea captain with the Woermann Line. In 1903 he arrived in Swakopmund. He found a small group of New Apostolic immigrants from Germany. Soon divine services began in the local lighthouse a beacon of faith in a new land. This humble beginning marked the birth of the New Apostolic Church in Namibia.

The church’s growth wasn’t always smooth sailing. The First and Second World Wars impacted Namibia deeply. The church weathered these storms. New life came from an unexpected source. Namibian guest workers returned from Zambia in the late 1950s. They brought with them the New Apostolic faith. Congregations flourished particularly in the northern Caprivi Strip. This influx expanded the church’s reach significantly. Ministers from Zambia served the north while those from South Africa served the south.

Namibia’s independence in 1990 marked a turning point. The church came under the care of the Cape District. This solidified its presence in the newly independent nation. The New Apostolic Church in Namibia continued to blossom. It now boasts over 21000 members in 140 congregations. More than 1100 ministers guide their spiritual journey. The small group that met in a lighthouse grew into a thriving community a testament to the enduring power of faith.

Think of the stories whispered within these walls. The prayers offered during times of both joy and hardship. The unwavering dedication of those who kept the flame of faith alive through turbulent times. The New Apostolic Church in Swakopmund isn’t just a building it is a living history. It is a symbol of resilience and spiritual growth a beacon of hope on the Namibian coast. It continues its mission to serve and guide its faithful members. It stands as a reminder of a small group’s humble start and a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity. Let the spirit of this place inspire you as we continue our tour.
