Why are all these buildings so flat? You might ask yourself this question when you stand in the middle of Neubrück. Neubrück is a relatively young district in Cologne. It was built between 1965 and 1970 on the former airfield of the Ostheim airfield. To accommodate a growing population, the city decided to create a new residential area. A special feature of Neubrück is its architecture. Almost all buildings have flat roofs. These were very modern in the 1960s and still characterize the appearance of Neubrück today. The cornerstone of the new settlement was laid in 1965. Even former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer was present at the ceremony. Adenauer had previously intervened to get the sale negotiations for the land moving. The Federal Ministry of Defence had initially been reluctant to release it. Today, Neubrück is a green and quiet residential area with a good infrastructure. There are schools, kindergartens, shops, and restaurants. Despite its proximity to the city center, Neubrück has retained its village character.
