Have you ever wondered why Vienna is dotted with so many statues and chapels dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk? This peculiar chapel, the Nepomukkapelle, is one of them and stands right here on the bank of the Danube Canal. Its history is a unique journey through the 18th and 19th centuries, a testament to the devotion of the Viennese people and their respect for this patron saint of bridges and the protection against flood. He was a Czech priest who died tragically in the 14th century, and his story became a legend that spread across Europe. The first Nepomukkapelle in Vienna was a humble wooden structure built in 1729. But it faced a precarious fate, being torn down due to the looming threat of invasion. The chapel was rebuilt in 1744 but faced ongoing financial struggles for its continued existence.

Fast forward to the late 19th century. The Nepomukkapelle stood in the path of progress, an obstacle to the construction of the Stephanie Bridge. The city of Vienna stepped in and paid for the chapel to be dismantled and rebuilt on the opposite side of the canal. Yet, its journey wasn’t over. In 1908, the chapel stood in the way of another important project, the construction of a new lock for the Danube Canal. Once again, Vienna’s leaders agreed to pay for the chapel’s relocation. It was shifted further upstream by 130 meters, taking its place on the spot where you see it today. Today, the Nepomukkapelle stands as a symbol of resilience and faith, a testament to the enduring power of a story that transcends time.
