Have you ever noticed a small chapel tucked away on a quiet street, almost hidden from the bustling life around it? This is the Nepomuk-Kapelle, a small, unassuming sanctuary dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, a Christian martyr who was thrown into the Vltava River in the 14th century. The Nepomuk-Kapelle stands in the heart of Vienna and has been moved multiple times over the centuries. The first version of the chapel was built in 1729, but was destroyed in 1741. A second chapel took its place, but due to damage caused by an ice floe, the city of Vienna was forced to financially help the chapel. The Nepomuk-Kapelle had to be replaced again in 1884, this time on the left bank of the Danube Canal. Sadly, it had to be moved once again, to its current location, about 130 meters further upstream, in 1908. Although the Nepomuk-Kapelle has been moved multiple times and has experienced many struggles and challenges along the way, still stands today, a testament to the enduring faith of the people of Vienna. The chapel is a reminder that even in the midst of hustle and bustle of life, there is always a place for quiet reflection and prayer.
