For years Corinthians longed for a modern stadium. Their old home the Estádio do Parque São Jorge held fewer than 18000 spectators. Ambitious plans surfaced as early as 1968. Presidents envisioned colossal structures. One even dreamed of a 135000 seat covered stadium. Another suggested buying the Pacaembu. These dreams however remained just that. Dreams.
Then came a turning point. The opportunity to host the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This spurred the construction of the Neo Química Arena. It was a pivotal moment. The stadium initially known as Arena Corinthians transformed from a mere sporting venue to a symbol of national pride. It hosted the opening ceremony and five other World Cup matches. The initial budget was 820 million reals. The final cost soared to almost 1.2 billion reals. This included a tax exemption of 420 million reals.
To meet FIFA’s 60000-seat requirement temporary seating was added. After the World Cup these were removed. The Neo Química Arena officially opened on May 18 2014. The inaugural match pitted Corinthians against Figueirense. Figueirense won 1-0.
The stadium’s design is as striking as its history. Architect Aníbal Coutinho aimed to make the fans feel close to the action. The gigantic video screen on the east side is one of the largest in the world. It measures 170 meters wide and 20 meters high.
The Neo Química Arena isn’t just about football. It’s become a multipurpose venue hosting concerts and other events. The naming rights were sold to Neo Química. The deal allows for concerts. Initially the Corinthians president opposed this. He was persuaded by club leaders.
