Can you see them? Nelson and Tracy Wolff are forever captured in bronze. This life-size statue honors their lasting impact on San Antonio. It stands in the San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
The Nelson and Tracy Wolff Sculpture captures a moment in time. The couple appears to be strolling hand-in-hand. Sculptor Armando Hinojosa immortalized their likeness. He measured every detail from their nose widths to their heights.
Nelson Wolff is styled in his signature suit and fedora. Tracy Wolff wears a simple shift dress and a cross necklace. This reflects her attire at the unveiling. The sculpture is a tribute to their decades of public service.
The idea for the Nelson and Tracy Wolff Sculpture came from Dr. Alfonso Chiscano. He was a cardiac surgeon and history enthusiast. Sadly, he passed away in 2019. His son, Steve, and Henry Cisneros completed the fundraising. They raised $250000 for the statue and its installation.
The Nelson and Tracy Wolff Sculpture is made of 45 or 50 bronze pieces. These pieces were welded together. Hinojosa initially worked on the sculpture in Laredo. The final casting was done in Bulverde at Steven’s Art Foundry. Nelson Wolff joked that his head almost fell off during the hot casting process.
Tracy Wolff founded the Hildago Foundation. It developed the Children’s Court in Bexar County. The foundation also preserved the historic Bexar County Courthouse. Plus, it created BiblioTechs which are all-digital libraries across San Antonio.
Nelson Wolff served as Bexar County judge for 21 years. He was also a state senator and city councilman. He oversaw the building of the Alamodome. Nelson Wolff also created the San Antonio Water System. He extended the River Walk southward too.
The Nelson and Tracy Wolff Sculpture stands near UTSA’s new San Pedro I building. Alfonso Chiscano wanted future generations to learn about the Wolffs. He hoped they would ask about their contributions to the community.
At the unveiling, Tracy Wolff expressed pride in her husband’s accomplishments. Nelson Wolff spoke of his fortune in meeting his wife. He said they would continue to walk along the San Pedro Creek for a long time.
