Craving a serene escape surrounded by hills and water? Then Nazaré Paulista is calling. Nazaré Paulista is a municipality in São Paulo. This place offers a blend of history and natural beauty.

Nazaré Paulista began as a small village. It grew around a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Nazareth. Mathias Lopes, a bandeirante, built the chapel in 1676. The story goes that Mathias and his brother both had chapels. However, only Mathias possessed an image of Nossa Senhora de Nazareth.

His brother, envious, moved the image to his chapel. Miraculously, the image returned to Mathias’s chapel. This happened repeatedly. Mathias then built a church to honor the saint.

The village of Nazaré Paulista officially became a Vila in 1850. It achieved municipality status in 1906. The area has seen some changes over time. Piracaia was once part of Nazaré. Bom Jesus dos Perdões was also incorporated and later separated. In 1944, the town’s name officially became Nazaré Paulista.

Nazaré Paulista sits at an altitude of 845 meters. The municipality covers 326.3 square kilometers. The area’s landscape includes mountains, springs, and waterfalls. The Atibainha reservoir is a prominent feature.

The reservoir is part of the Cantareira System. It is a vital water source for São Paulo. Nazaré Paulista also houses the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas. This institute focuses on conservation.

The municipality has a population around 18,698. It is located in the Campinas region. Nazaré Paulista is known for its portion of the Itaberaba State Park. This park links the Serra da Cantareira and Serra da Mantiqueira. The park protects the Atlantic Forest and several water basins. It also shelters endangered animal species.

Local legend says that the image of Nossa Senhora mysteriously moved between chapels. The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Nazaré still stands. It showcases an archaic and baroque style. The church features wood carvings and old images.

The city was served by Telecomunicações de São Paulo. Later, Telefônica acquired it and adopted the Vivo brand. Today, Vivo offers cell phones, fixed lines, and internet services.

Avanilde Aparecida Gonzaga Canedo is the current mayor. The city council includes representatives from various parties.

Nazaré Paulista boasts twenty-four neighborhoods. These include Araujo, Atibainha, and Centro. Each area adds to the town’s character.

Elektro supplies electric power to Nazaré Paulista. Sabesp manages water and sewage services. The city has its own water source. It is part of the Cantareira reservoir system.
