Did you know that what we now call the National University of Laos didn’t even exist until 1996? That’s right, this bustling hub of knowledge, the National University of Laos, had a relatively recent start. Before 1996, higher education in Laos was scattered across various colleges, overseen by different ministries. But on June 9th, 1995, the Prime Minister issued Decree Number 50/PM. This decree merged those colleges, giving birth to the National University of Laos under the Ministry of Education. Initially enrolling just over 8,000 students, the National University of Laos rapidly expanded. By the academic year 2009-2010, the student population had skyrocketed to around 40,000. While the focus shifted towards vocational training, leading to a decrease in enrollment in recent years, the National University of Laos remains a cornerstone of Laotian education. Today, with around 23,000 students, the National University of Laos stands as a testament to the power of unification and a symbol of Laos’ commitment to education.
