Three million gulden. That’s how much it cost to build the National Theatre. A staggering sum raised by the people of Bohemia. The National Theatre isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Czech national identity. It represents their cultural heritage their language and their spirit.

The official opening was in 1881 a grand celebration honoring Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. But tragedy struck. Days before the official opening a fire devastated the building. A national catastrophe they called it.

But the Czech people didn’t give up. They rallied together. Donations poured in from all walks of life from the poorest villagers to the Emperor himself. Within weeks they raised enough money to rebuild. Reconstruction included modern improvements central heating better ventilation and electric lights replacing gas lamps. The National Theatre reopened two years later.
