Can you imagine a theatre with a repertoire of over 100 productions? Here, right before us, is the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. This stunning neoclassical building, with its grand facade, has been gracing Sukhbaatar Square since its opening on May 18, 1963. The theatre was initially established as the State Musical Drama Theatre. It was then decided to split it into two separate entities: the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the State Academic Drama Theatre. The National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet marked its grand opening with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic, Eugene Onegin. Today, this theatre boasts an impressive repertoire of over 100 national and international classical works, including 56 ballets and 54 operas. From Mozart’s enchanting “The Magic Flute” to the passionate drama of Verdi’s “Aida”, the theatre offers a rich tapestry of world-renowned operas. In addition to international classics, the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet proudly showcases Mongolian operas. These include gems like B. Sharav’s “Chinggis Khaan” and D.
