Imagine a young nation’s capital, still finding its footing. Nathaniel Hazard, a dedicated Congressman from Rhode Island, arrived here to serve his country. He wouldn’t leave.

Nathaniel Hazard was born in Newport Rhode Island in 1776. He represented Rhode Island in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hazard’s story is one of promise cut short. He graduated from Brown University in 1792. Before coming to Washington, he served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. He even served as speaker.

In 1819, Nathaniel Hazard was elected to the Sixteenth Congress. He served from March 4, 1819. Sadly, his term was brief. Nathaniel Hazard died in Washington D.C. on December 17, 1820. He was only 43 or 44 years old.

He now rests here in the Congressional Cemetery. This cemetery is the final resting place for many early members of Congress. Hazard’s early death is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in public service.

Nathaniel Hazard was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. This party was founded by Thomas Jefferson. Hazard’s political beliefs shaped his service in Congress. He worked to represent the interests of his constituents in Rhode Island.
