Step back in time, imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of the 12th century. Standing before you is the Narození Panny Marie, a Romanesque church with a rich history. It’s the heart of the Záběhlice neighborhood and a testament to Prague’s enduring faith. The church was originally built around 1125, and in the 14th century, it was rebuilt in the Romanesque-Gothic style. It used to be the parish church, a central gathering place for the community. The church was hit by lightning in the 19th century, destroying the original tower. The tower was then replaced by the Neo-Romanesque tower we see today, between 1876 and 1880. The church’s altar painting, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, was created in 1861. Did you know that the church has three bells, two dating back to 1876, and the other to 1889? Each bell tells a story, a whisper of history. This architectural gem has endured the test of time, with major repairs in 1948 and the restoration of its façade in 2000. Narození Panny Marie stands as a symbol of the past, a testament to the faith of the people, a reminder of the resilience of a community.
