A hush falls over the group as we gather here, before Narodowa Street. It’s a name that resonates with a quiet power. Narodowa translates to “National” in Polish. This seemingly ordinary street holds a piece of a much larger, much grander story. It’s the story of the National Library of Poland, a vital thread in the tapestry of Polish history and culture. The library’s main seat is located in the Ochota district of Warsaw, adjacent to Mokotów Field. Narodowa Street, you see, leads directly to its heart. The National Library, or Biblioteka Narodowa as it’s known in Polish, traces its lineage back to the 18th century, to the noble Załuski Library. Imagine, in 1747, two brothers, Józef Andrzej and Andrzej Stanisław Załuski, established what was then one of the largest libraries in Europe. Their vision was audacious: to gather the entirety of Polish literature and make it accessible to all. However, this dream faced a cruel blow. After the second Partition of Poland in 1795, the Załuski collection was seized by Catherine II of Russia. The books were transported to St. Petersburg. There they became part of the Imperial Public Library. Many volumes were damaged, destroyed, or even stolen during the forced relocation. The loss was a devastating blow to Polish cultural heritage. But the spirit of the Załuski brothers, their dedication to preserving and sharing knowledge, did not die. In 1918, Poland regained its independence. The absence of a national library was a gaping hole in the nation’s cultural fabric. So, on February 24, 1928, President Ignacy Mościcki decreed the creation of the National Library in its modern form. It opened its doors in 1930 on Narodowa Street. It initially housed 200,000 volumes, a testament to the enduring thirst for knowledge. Today, the National Library’s collections have grown exponentially. They include over 7,900,000 volumes. Among them are invaluable treasures like 160,000 objects printed before 1801, over 26,000 manuscripts, and 400,000 drawings. It stands as a beacon of knowledge. It is a symbol of Poland’s unwavering commitment to its cultural legacy. As you walk down Narodowa Street, remember this journey. Remember the brothers who dared to dream of a library for all, the tragic loss of their collection, and the phoenix-like rebirth of the National Library. This street is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a pathway paved with the pursuit of knowledge. It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
