The Dalejský profil National Nature Monument is a place of great historical and geological importance. It sits a bit outside of Prague and is surrounded by the beautiful Prokopské and Dalejské valleys. It is a landscape formed by the force of nature and humankind over centuries. The Dalejský profil was designated as a protected area way back in 1982. It is a fascinating area to explore.

The valley was originally forested and was known for its limestone quarries. In the 20th century, quarrying for limestone was an important industry in the area. The quarrying exposed a stunning geological profile of the area’s history — a record of the Devonian age and the more ancient Silurian and Ordovician eras. These geological formations are the main attractions and the reason for the area’s protected status. In these rocks, layers of ancient life are preserved.

Many fossils have been unearthed here from the Paleozoic era, including evidence of trilobites, crinoids, brachiopods, cephalopods, and mollusks. Each gorge here is even named after a different kind of fossil that scientists have found there. For instance, Kromusov’s Cliff gets its name from the Trilobites found there, while Arethusina Gorge gets its name from the Aulacopleura trilobites discovered there by scientists.

As you wander through the trails here, take a closer look at the rocks and you will see a wide variety of fossils. It is an impressive reminder of the long history of this area and the incredible diversity of life in the past.

You may be surprised that this area is also a haven for many plants and animals. Over 1,500 species have been recorded here! You might see a few interesting plants like the endemic Critically Endangered Gagea bohemica or the Geastrum pouzarii fungus, which, amazingly, is only found in a few spots here in the Czech Republic and in Switzerland. The diverse flora is a testament to the varying environments found here: rocky slopes, forested areas, grasslands, and the waters of the Dalejský stream.

All of this makes the Dalejský profil National Nature Monument a truly spectacular place to visit. Here, the history of Earth’s past meets the vibrancy of the present, reminding us of the fragility of our planet and the beauty of its natural wonders. Enjoy your exploration!
