Beneath the canopy of Tokyo, a hidden gem awaits. This is Nanushi-no-Taki Park. Have you ever wondered about the story behind its name and tranquil beauty?

Nanushi-no-Taki Park was once a private garden. It belonged to the Hatano family. They were village headmen or nanushi. The family generously opened their garden to the public as a summer retreat. The waterfalls became known as Nanushi no Taki, meaning waterfalls of the village headman.

In the late 19th century, a trader named Tokusaburo Kakiuchi acquired the garden. He transformed it into a sophisticated landscape. Kakiuchi added stones, maple trees, and artificial gorges. His goal was to recreate the scenery of his beloved Shiobara in Tochigi.

Today, Nanushi-no-Taki Park is a municipal park in Kita Ward. It offers a thick forest and natural springs. The park is also home to four stunning waterfalls. Otoko-daki is the largest. Its water cascades down eight meters.

The water is so clear that you can see the stream bed below. Imagine standing here feeling the cool mist on your skin. Listen to the soothing sound of the water.

Nanushi-no-Taki Park offers seasonal delights. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring. Maple leaves blaze with color in autumn. Camellias add beauty in winter. Bird-watching events are held here, connecting visitors with nature.

During the Edo period, this garden offered rest to the public. The headman and businessman both shared an excellent sense of nature.

Nanushi-no-Taki Park is close to Oji Inari Shrine. From Oji Station, it is a ten-minute walk. Nanushi-no-Taki Park is an accessible escape.

Nanushi-no-Taki Park is a testament to the beauty of nature and human artistry. It’s a place where history and tranquility meet. As you leave, carry with you the serene spirit of Nanushi-no-Taki Park.
