Dedicated to seven deities, Nanasha-jinja Shrine stands as a serene oasis in Tokyo. It is a testament to Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1793, the shrine’s early records were lost in a fire. However, its story continues through its grounds and traditions.

Originally, Nanasha-jinja Shrine resided within the Muryōji Temple grounds. This was in what is now the old Furukawa Garden. It was moved to its current location during the Meiji period. This move followed the separation of Shinto and Buddhism.

The name Nanasha-jinja comes from the seven deities enshrined here. They include Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto. Also among them are Amenokoyane no Mikoto, Issokoridome no Mikoto and Ichikishimahime no Mikoto. Two emperors, Nakai and Ojin, complete the seven.

Nanasha-jinja Shrine offers more than just historical significance. It is a place of tranquility. The shrine is known as a power spot. It is said to bring various benefits. These include matchmaking, safe childbirth and family harmony. It also promotes career advancement, travel safety and business prosperity.

One notable feature is the thatch ring. It is set up along the approach to the shrine. This ring is used in the summer purification ceremony. People pass through it to purify their bodies and minds. It drives away bad luck. They also pray for good health and fortune. To pass through the ring, one must walk through it. Turn left, then right, and repeat three times.

Near the torii gate, you will find a vertebra. It has a swollen, pregnant woman-like appearance. This is said to be beneficial for childbirth and safe delivery. Ema or votive picture tablets adorn the sacred ginkgo tree. This ginkgo tree is called Gankake Icho. It symbolizes fertility.

Nanasha-jinja Shrine is famous for prayers for children. Komainu or small dogs protect them. This is because the shrine is dedicated to Izanaki-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto.

The shrine also features a dance hall, an Inari shrine and a Kumano shrine. There is also a Sugawara shrine, a Mimine shrine and statues of Confucius and Mencius. You can find a stone for hardening the teeth.

Nanasha-jinja Shrine was also a place for Eiichi Shibusawa. He founded Japan’s first bank. He founded over 500 companies. Shibusawa also engaged in philanthropic activities. In 2024, his portrait will be on Japan’s new 10,000 yen bill.

The shrine is loved by locals. Jomon and Yayoi pottery have been found here. These were from shell mounds. They suggest that ancient people lived here.

As you leave Nanasha-jinja Shrine, remember its blend of history and peace. It is a place where you can reflect on the past. You can also appreciate the present.
