“A square named after a writer?” a woman’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “Now, that’s something you don’t see every day.” She was right. We stood at náměstí Bohumila Hrabala, a place honoring a literary giant. This isn’t your typical grand square. It’s more a humble space dominated by a bus terminal. But don’t let that fool you. náměstí Bohumila Hrabala stands on ground steeped in stories, thanks to Bohumil Hrabal. Hrabal, a celebrated Czech writer, lived and wrote just steps from here, on Na Hrázi Street. His apartment, sadly demolished, was a hub for Prague’s creative spirits. Today, a unique memorial graces the square. It’s a massive wall designed by Tatiana Svatošová. Look closely, you’ll see Hrabal’s portrait, his trusty typewriter, and even his beloved cats immortalized in art. These elements offer a glimpse into the life and work of a man who found poetry in everyday life, turning the mundane into the extraordinary. Even without his physical presence, Hrabal’s spirit lingers at náměstí Bohumila Hrabala. It is a place where literature and life intertwine.
