“Do you see those sculptures?” I ask my audience. We stand in the heart of the nàm. Hedviky Vilgusovè.

This square in Prague’s Klànovice district isn’t just any open space. It’s a tribute to Hedvika Vilgusovà a remarkable woman. A children’s book illustrator and local politician she left an enduring legacy.

Hedvika wasn’t just a talented artist. Her illustrations graced over 60 books. These weren’t your typical children’s stories either. Think “One Thousand and One Nights” and even an illustrated Bible. Her unique style used oil paints. This was unusual for children’s book illustrators of her time. Her work is known for its intricate details sparking children’s imagination.

Her life wasn’t confined to her studio. Hedvika was a prominent figure in Klànovice. She served as the chairwoman of the local Green Party. She was also a member of the municipal council. She championed environmental causes until her death in 2007.

In recognition of her contributions the square was named in her honor in June 2008. Adding to its charm is a series of sculptures. Created since 2012 during a sculpture symposium these works further celebrate Hedvika’s spirit.

So as you stroll through the nàm. Hedviky Vilgusovè take a moment to appreciate the art. Consider the life of the woman it commemorates. Hedvika Vilgusovà a true artist and local leader. A woman whose legacy continues to shape this lovely Prague square. Her impact resonates far beyond the Klànovice neighborhood. A small square holds a big story a testament to a life well-lived. Even an asteroid is named after her. It orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter. Number 98127 Vilgusovà. That’s a legacy indeed.
