Established sometime between 1368 and 1398, Nai Wai Village stands as a testament to the To Clan’s resilience. Nai Wai Village, also known as Wong Kong Wai, is nestled in Lam Tei, within the Tuen Mun District. Originally, the To Clan hailed from Poyang in Jiangxi province. They migrated to Ngau Tam Mei and eventually settled in Tuen Mun Tai Tsuen. As the clan grew, they branched out, establishing five fortified villages in the Lam Tei area. These include Nai Wai Village, Tsing Chuen Wai, Tuen Tsz Wai, Lam Tei Tsuen, and Tuen Mun San Tsuen. Nai Wai Village was once a walled village, complete with four watchtowers at each corner. About 200 years ago, the entrance gate was relocated to the southern outer row of houses for feng shui purposes. This shift in the village’s layout reflects the importance of traditional beliefs in shaping its physical form. Nai Wai Village is recognized under the New Territories Small House Policy. It’s also one of the 36 villages represented within the Tuen Mun Rural Committee. This signifies its continued relevance in local governance. By 1969, Nai Wai Village and the surrounding area experienced significant industrial growth. A study by Victor Sit Fung Sheun documented the rise of factories amidst the traditional agricultural landscape. This marked a turning point in the village’s history, as it adapted to the changing economic landscape of Hong Kong.
