The bases of Nahal Yehuda follow strict Jewish dietary laws. Only wives of soldiers and officers are permitted on base. This prevents interactions considered inappropriate between men and women according to Jewish law. The battalion depends on community recruitment. It recruits from ultra-Orthodox Religious Zionist and other similar backgrounds. Volunteers also come from overseas.
Initially, Nahal Yehuda had only 30 soldiers. By 2009, it grew to over 1000. It became a fully functioning battalion. Soldiers undergo five months of basic training. This is followed by six months of advanced training. The battalion includes training companies and operational units.
Despite its goals, Nahal Yehuda has faced controversy. Soldiers have been accused of abuses against Palestinians. These include killing unarmed civilians and torture.
