Journey back to the early Heian period in Japan. Picture an exquisite statue, the Eleven-Faced Kannon. This sacred object of worship resides within Myououin Temple. Myououin, nestled on the slopes of Mt. Atago, has a rich history. Originally known as Joufuku-ji, Myououin was founded in 807. It was established by the Risshu, also known as the “Vinaya School,” one of the Nanto Rokushu. During the Edo period, Myououin transitioned to the Shingon sect of Buddhism under the patronage of the Mizuno clan. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the artistry of the past. Myououin’s main hall, a blend of Japanese and Chinese architectural styles, dates back to 1321. It is recognized as a National Treasure. The temple’s five-storied pagoda, also a National Treasure, is a sight to behold. Built in 1348, it stands tall at 29 meters and ranks as the fifth oldest pagoda in Japan. Imagine the community coming together, funding its construction through donations. The Hagi-Mon gate is another marvel. Legend says it was carved from a single piece of bush clover wood. Myououin’s vibrant red and white buildings contrast beautifully with the lush greenery of Mt. Atago. In autumn, fiery orange foliage creates a picturesque backdrop. In winter, snow and ice add a touch of magic to the vermilion architecture. Myououin offers a serene escape, inviting contemplation and appreciation for Japan’s rich cultural heritage.
