Gazing out at the bay, what secrets does the Rainbow Bridge hold? This iconic suspension bridge graces Tokyo Bay. It links Shibaura Pier and Odaiba. Let’s uncover its story.

The Rainbow Bridge wasn’t always called that. Its official name is “Tokyo Ko Renrakukyo”. But the public chose the name Rainbow Bridge. Construction began in 1987. Kawasaki Heavy Industries built it. It opened in 1993. The bridge spans 798 meters. Its main span stretches 580 meters. That is quite impressive.

The towers holding the Rainbow Bridge are white. This design choice complements Tokyo’s skyline. Lamps adorn the supporting wires. They illuminate in red, white, and green each night. Solar energy powers these colorful displays. This makes the bridge environmentally friendly.

You can walk across the Rainbow Bridge. Access is from Tamachi Station or Shibaura-futo Station. The bridge has two decks. The upper deck carries the Shuto Expressway. The lower deck has the Yurikamome transit system. Walkways line the outer sides. Route 482 runs in-between.

The walkways offer stunning views. The north side overlooks Tokyo harbor and Tokyo Tower. The south side shows Tokyo Bay and sometimes Mount Fuji. Walkway hours vary. They are longer in summer. Bicycles are allowed if you push them. No riding. Also light motorcycles are not permitted on either deck or the walkway of the bridge. Motorcycle pillion passengers are also banned.

Imagine strolling across. Ships sail beneath you. The city sprawls before you. On a clear day you might glimpse Mt. Fuji. The Rainbow Bridge isn’t just a crossing. It’s an experience. It’s a symbol of Tokyo. It is a link between the city and its vibrant waterfront.

So, as you stand here consider the Rainbow Bridge. Its colors. Its views. Its story. It is more than steel and concrete. It embodies Tokyo’s spirit. It is innovative. It is beautiful. It is unforgettable.
