Picture this. You stand before the Muzeum Zielonki in Warsaw. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. This building at Kolejowa Street 11 once housed the local police and town hall. Now it holds a treasure trove of Zielonka’s past.

The Muzeum Zielonki opened on September 3rd 2019. It commemorates the 75th anniversary of a crucial air battle. The main exhibit focuses on the military airfield in Zielonka during September 1939. It details the actions of pilots defending the skies above Warsaw. The museum features biographies of these brave airmen.

For younger visitors a giant game board is installed on the floor. This interactive game “111. Alarm dla Warszawy” from the Institute of National Remembrance is a fun way to learn about the air battles. Model airplanes hang suspended from the ceilings. A second room displays artifacts and photos from World War II in Zielonka. A smaller room is dedicated to the Kościuszko Uprising and Leopold Janikowski.

A fourth room is currently leased for commercial purposes. However plans exist to include it in the museum’s future expansion. The Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Zielonki will manage the museum. It will remain a testament to Zielonka’s enduring spirit. The museum’s creators wanted to showcase the airfield’s heroism. They also wanted to show how Zielonka’s history intertwines with larger national events.

The museum’s creation involved significant effort. The town government provided funding. The mayor and the director of OKiS were instrumental. Numerous individuals and organizations contributed. Their names are listed in gratitude for their dedication to creating the museum.

The Muzeum Zielonki offers more than just exhibits. It is a journey through time. It’s a tribute to courage and resilience. It’s a celebration of Zielonka’s unique place in Polish history. Visit the Muzeum Zielonki. Explore its fascinating past. Discover the stories that await you.
