Completed in 1939, Mutual Heights stands as a beacon of Art Deco brilliance. This building, originally known as the Mutual Building, whispers tales of ambition and artistry. Mutual Heights originally served as the headquarters for the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society, now Old Mutual. The company sought a structure that embodied strength, security, and confidence in the future. The architects, Louw & Louw, along with Fred Glennie, embarked on a global quest for inspiration, studying architectural marvels in the US, South America, England, and Sweden. Their journey led them to embrace the Art Deco style, a choice reflected in Mutual Heights’ striking ziggurat structure and prismoid windows. These triangular windows, a unique feature, not only add visual interest but also maximize natural light and allow for efficient heat management. Look closely at the granite facade. It was hewn from a single boulder on Paarl Mountain. Adorning the Darling Street facade are decorative baboon and elephant heads, adding a touch of whimsy to the imposing structure. A carved stone frieze, one of the longest in the world, wraps around three sides of Mutual Heights. It depicts scenes from South Africa’s colonial history. This frieze, executed by a team of Italian immigrants led by Adolfo Lorenzi, offers a glimpse into the past. Step inside, and you’ll be transported to a world of marble, onyx, and gold leaf. The entrance hall boasts a soaring ceiling adorned with gold leaf, while black, gold-veined onyx lines the walls. The banking hall, now an events venue, exudes neoclassical grandeur with its marble columns and Art Deco light fixtures. Ascend to the fourth floor, and you’ll discover the former Directors’ Board Room. A carved stinkwood frieze featuring animal and floral motifs graces the room, while a mural by Joyce Ord-Brown depicts Cape Town as the “Tavern of the Seas.” Mutual Heights’ transformation into a residential building began in 2003, breathing new life into Cape Town’s central business district. Today, it stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity, a blend of Art Deco splendor and historical significance.
