Can you feel the weight of sorrow that lingers around this stone? This is the Mutsuko Ayano Gedenkstein. It stands as a memorial to a young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
Mutsuko Ayano was a Japanese student. She came to Trier to pursue her passion for German studies. Her dreams were shattered on November 17 1983.
Mutsuko was on her way to the university. She walked along the old Kreuzweg on Petrisberg. A man attacked her intending to steal her purse containing only 90 Mark. When she resisted he brutally assaulted her. She died four days later from her injuries. She was only 27 years old.
The Mutsuko Ayano Gedenkstein was erected in 1984. The Rotary Club sponsored the memorial for their scholarship recipient. Trier sculptor Jupp Zimmer created it. He used simple sandstone according to her parents’ wishes. The stone marks the site of the attack.
Look at the inscription on the front. It reads: MUTSUKO AYANO OKAYAMA-JAPAN GEB.30.09.1956 GEST.21.11.1983 SIE LIEBTE DEUTSCHLAND EIN LEBEN VOLLER HOFFNUNG FAND AN DIESER STELLE EIN GEWALTSAMES ENDE 17. NOVEMBER 1983 IHRE FREUNDE. It speaks of her love for Germany and her life full of hope. It poignantly notes her violent end at this very spot.
The inscription on the back reads: DER WEG BUDDHAS IST WUNDERSAM. It translates to: THE PATH OF BUDDHA IS WONDROUS.
Even after this tragedy Mutsuko’s parents created the Mutsuko Ayano Fonds. The fund provides scholarships for Japanese students to study in Trier. It fosters Japanese-German friendship. It also supports the study of Japanology in Trier.
Two Trier citizens volunteer to care for the Mutsuko Ayano Gedenkstein. They ensure fresh flowers and candles always adorn the site. This shows the enduring respect for Mutsuko.
