Ever wondered where musical brilliance takes flight? Here at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, melodies have echoed through its halls since its founding in 1797. Franz Joseph Fröhlich established it as the Collegium musicum academicum.

The Hochschule für Musik Würzburg boasts a rich history. It transformed into the Bayerisches Staatskonservatorium der Musik. This Bavarian State Conservatory of Music existed from 1921 to August 1973. On September 1, 1973, it officially became the Musikhochschule. Since 2001, it has incorporated the Hermann-Zilcher-Konservatorium.

Today, the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg spreads across three buildings. You’ll find them at Hofstallstraße 6-8, Ebracher Gasse 1, and Hofstraße 13 on Residenzplatz.

Christoph Wünsch has been the president since 2017. Around 435 students were enrolled in the summer semester of 2023. The Hochschule offers a range of programs. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Music degree. These programs include artistic and artistic-pedagogical studies. Traditionally, students earned a Diplom-Musiker or Diplom-Musiklehrer. But these programs are phasing out for new students. The Hochschule still provides music studies. These are for artistic teaching at grammar schools. It also includes artistic teaching at primary, middle, and secondary schools.

Additionally, the Hochschule offers advanced studies. Students even have the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. The Hochschule fosters young talent. Musically gifted children receive specific support through early musical education.

Step inside the concert hall. The concert hall boasts a remarkable organ built in 2016. Orgelmanufaktur Klais from Bonn created it. Previously, an organ from G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. resided in the hall. The new organ’s design draws inspiration from Johann Friedrich Wender’s Arnstadt Bach Organ. It dates back to 1703. However, it is not purely Baroque. It incorporates registers from various eras. This makes it a symphonic instrument. The organ uses proportional magnets in its playing technology. It also features networking and control options. These include MIDI and OSC interfaces. Electronic control enables unique features. Examples are key locks and free manual assignments. The Hochschule even plans to explore artificial intelligence applications. Currently, the instrument has 83 registers. These are spread across three manuals and a pedal. Plans include adding registers to the fourth manual. Eventually, it will have 106 registers.

Many notable figures have taught at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. Franz Joseph Fröhlich was a musicologist. Karl Muck was a conductor. Bertold Hummel was a composer. Siegfried Fink was a percussionist and composer. And Christoph Bossert is an organist.

The Hochschule für Musik Würzburg stands as a beacon. It fosters musical talent. It provides a space for innovation. The Hochschule continues to shape the future of music.
