Perhaps art you can touch is more engaging? Here at the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, that’s precisely what you’ll find. This unique museum, part of Chosenin Temple’s grounds, offers a hands-on experience with contemporary art. The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture houses 250 sculptures. These are works by 57 contemporary sculptors. Most are Japanese artists from the second half of the 20th century and later.

Imagine running your fingers over the cool bronze of a figure. Picture the texture of carved stone beneath your palm. The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture invites you to appreciate art not just with your eyes but with your sense of touch.

The museum itself is impressive. A hexagonal main building houses indoor exhibitions. Outside, you’ll find four distinct exhibition areas. These include a bronze garden with a staircase and a stone sculpture space featuring a striking stone gate.

The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture offers seasonal exhibitions. These showcase the permanent collection. Private exhibitions and special exhibitions of young artists are also featured.

The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture is free to enter. Simply sign in at the entrance. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. It is closed on Mondays. It also closes during the winter season from December 20 to January 14. Closures also happen for exhibit replacements.

To get here from Meguro Station, take the Tokyu bus towards Sangen-jaya. Get off at the Shizen-en stop. The museum is a short three-minute walk from there.

Inside, you might find a small tearoom, though it’s not always open. Plan to spend about 20 to 40 minutes here. This is plenty of time to explore the artwork. The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture presents the work of 56 contemporary Japanese artists. You’ll discover over 200 pieces displayed across two indoor floors and four outdoor areas.

The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture stands as a testament to the power of art. Art is meant to be experienced, not just observed. As you leave, consider how your understanding of sculpture has changed. Did the ability to touch the art deepen your connection to it? The Museum of Contemporary Sculpture offers a unique and memorable artistic journey.
