This building, the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, has an interesting past. Before it became a haven for modern art, it was once the home of Jan Cheng Elementary School during the Japanese colonial era. Later, the Taipei City Hall took over the space from 1945 to 1993. Imagine that – walking these halls where important city decisions were once made! In 1994, when the city hall moved to a shiny new building, the city decided to honor the history of this space. In 2001, it was reborn as the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei we see today. This makes it Taiwan’s very first museum dedicated to contemporary art. What’s even more unique, is that this building is shared with Jan Cheng Junior High School. It’s a remarkable example of a space where art and education coexist, each enriching the other.
