Welcome to a place that safeguards the very essence of São Caetano do Sul. The Museu Histórico Municipal is more than just a building. It is a portal to the past.
The Museu Histórico Municipal was created in 1959. It was officially opened in 1960 by Mayor Oswaldo Samuel Massei. Initially, it was located at the corner of Baraldi and Rio Grande do Sul streets. Sadly, it closed after only a year. But like any good story, it didn’t end there. The museum was reborn in 1977. It was during the centennial celebrations of São Caetano. It found its permanent home in December 1988.
Professor José de Souza Martins dreamed up the Museu Histórico Municipal. He believed São Caetano do Sul needed a place to preserve its history. Today, the Fundação Pró-Memória cares for it.
Housed within the Palacete De Nardi, the Museu Histórico Municipal is small. It occupies only 60 square meters. Yet it holds a vast collection. Over 5,000 pieces tell the story of this city. These items include personal belongings of early residents. There are also tools, artwork, and household items. You will find photos of pioneers. Also, there are sacred objects and furniture. Ceramics from local factories are on display too.
The De Nardi family arrived in 1877. They were among the first Italian immigrants from Treviso. Celeste De Nardi built the Palacete in 1896. Its architecture reflects the late 19th century. The building’s solid brick structure is impressive.
The Palacete De Nardi has served many purposes. It was once the city’s first official school. Later, it housed a bakery and the América Futebol Clube. In 1985, it became municipal property.
The Museu Histórico Municipal also hosts special projects. “A Peça em Destaque” highlights a specific artifact each month. This offers a closer look at individual items. It also encourages public engagement.
One featured item was a pair of skates from 1920. They belonged to Accacio Spachacquercia. He was a leader in the autonomist movement. His wife donated them to the Museu Histórico Municipal. Another highlight was a 1910 Voigtlonder Brownschueig Heliar camera. Known as “lambe-lambe”, photographers used it in public spaces. Indigenous artifacts have also been showcased.
