The Société d’Histoire des Israélites d’Alsace et de Lorraine knew something special was here. They alerted the Minister of Culture Jack Lang.
A six-month archaeological dig followed. The dig unearthed a square room about three meters to a side. The room had a barrel vault. At each corner sat puzzling Romanesque corbels. Their presence is architecturally inexplicable.

It dates back to the 11th or 12th century. The basin itself held at least 500 liters. The water came from the groundwater. Rainwater could also have been used.
