“If I weren’t Italian I would want to be Polish.” These words encapsulate the deep affection Saint Alojzy Orione held for Poland. Now gaze upon this mural. It commemorates a man whose heart transcended national borders.
The Mural Alojzy Orione before us celebrates a life dedicated to serving others. Alojzy Orione was born in Pontecurone Italy in 1872. He was the son of a humble stonecutter. From a young age Alojzy learned the value of hard work. He also learned compassion.
Alojzy’s path led him to the priesthood. He joined the seminary in Tortona. Even as a young cleric Alojzy gathered poor boys. He taught them about faith. He provided material support when he could.
Seeing his dedication the bishop entrusted Alojzy with the spiritual care of local youth. He preached and offered retreats. He visited hospitals prisons and the homes of the poor. Alojzy brought spiritual comfort to those in need.
Realizing the scope of his work Alojzy founded the Sons of Divine Providence in 1903. This religious order became known as the Orionists. Later he established a women’s branch. Alojzy also created a contemplative order. This order provided spiritual support for his charitable works.
Don Orione as he was also known established schools. He taught trades preparing students for work. He created boarding houses. He cared for souls and established missions. These missions reached Argentina Brazil Chile and Uruguay. He wanted to help Italian immigrants.
Alojzy Orione’s life blended action and contemplation. He led rescue efforts after earthquakes. He carried the injured provided food and built shelters. He remained in disaster areas for years. He mobilized resources to help.
Although he never visited Poland Alojzy cherished the nation. He admired its faith its love of freedom and its devotion to the Virgin Mary. When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939 Alojzy ordered prayers. He requested that a Polish flag be placed near the altar. The Orionists began their work in Poland in 1923.
Alojzy Orione died in 1940. His last words were “Jesus. Jesus. I am coming”. His body rests in Tortona at the Madonna della Guardia sanctuary. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1980. He was canonized in 2004.
Today the Little Work of Divine Providence is a large religious family. It includes priests brothers and sisters. They work with children youth and adults. They especially help the poor. The Orionists operate on four continents.
This Mural Alojzy Orione serves as a reminder. It is a reminder of a man who embodied love and service. It is a testament to his enduring legacy. May we all be inspired by Saint Alojzy Orione’s example. May we strive to make the world a better place.
