Have you ever wondered why a building in Stockholm is called “Munich Brewery”? It’s tucked away in the heart of Södermalm near the banks of Riddarfjärden. It’s a historical gem and a reminder of a time when beer flowed freely in this area. The building itself has a story as fascinating as its name. It wasn’t always a brewery. From 1740 onwards, this site was used for industrial purposes, from clothing and tile factories to paint factories. In 1857, a wholesaler named C C Brusell & Co began producing and selling beer here under the name “Munich Brewing Company”, inspired by the famous Bavarian city. The company’s success led to expansion, but also to a devastating fire in 1893. It was completely rebuilt in the distinctive Renaissance style, giving it the iconic look it has today.

The brewery operated for over a hundred years until 1971. Since then, it’s undergone a transformation – reborn as an event venue and conference center. Today, Mänchenbryggeriet is a bustling hub for events, conferences, dinners, exhibitions, and concerts. It’s a place where people gather to celebrate and make memories. This modern-day haven for events still holds echoes of its previous life. In 2018, they revived an old tradition and started a microbrewery, producing organic craft beer. It’s a tribute to the building’s history, and a reminder that even though things change, some traditions endure. So, as you stand before the Mänchenbryggeriet, remember the echo of the past, the clinking of glasses and the laughter of thirsty Stockholmers.
