In 1907, a transformation began at Mullberget. What was once a summer house in the Schweizer style, known as Lilla Manilla, became a grand villa. Mullberget, perched on Djurgården between Nedre Manilla and Täcka Udden, owes its rebirth to the renowned architect Ragnar Östberg. Commissioned by the future mayor of Stockholm, Yngve Larsson, and his wife Elin, Östberg reimagined the property. He cloaked Mullberget in dark brown paneling, a signature touch also seen in his work on Villa Ekarne. The interiors, too, were meticulously crafted. Artist Filip Månsson contributed decorative elements, while Elis i Taserud sculpted the striking columns in the living room. Mullberget wasn’t just a house; it was a home for the Larsson family for seventy years. Their children, Matts Bergom Larsson, Verna Lindberg, Ester Berggren, Richard Larsson, a younger Yngve Larsson, and Mårten Larsson, filled the villa with life. Even after the parents passed, the legacy continued. Mårten, also an architect, designed further expansions to Mullberget in 1962, adding upper and attic floors to the east wing. If you look closely, you can still see echoes of Östberg’s original vision, blended with Mårten’s later additions. This villa, Mullberget, stands as a testament to family, architectural evolution, and the enduring beauty of Djurgården. Even the furniture holds a story. Östberg designed birch armchairs with mahogany and birch inlays specifically for Mullberget. These pieces, with their intricate intarsia and geometric designs, were more than just furniture; they were an integral part of the villa’s artistic identity.
