Mukogaoka’s past is a captivating tale. The amusement park Mukogaoka Yuen closed in 2002. Its legacy lives on however in the beautiful Ikuta Ryokuchi Park. This expansive green space is a treasure trove for history buffs and art lovers. It boasts the Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum. This museum showcases 25 traditional houses minka some dating back 200 to 300 years. These houses relocated from various parts of Japan offer a glimpse into centuries past.
One house a striking example of gassho-zukuri architecture even had a maid for each child. Imagine the sheer opulence of such a household. The steep triangular roofs a clever design shed snow preventing collapse in areas with heavy snowfall. Volunteers tend to fires within these houses. They don’t just heat the houses though.
