Was this small stream once a mighty river? We are standing at Mukamukaiti Stream. It doesn’t seem very impressive now, does it? But don’t let its size fool you. This stream, known to some as Little Mukamuka Stream, played a vital role in the lives of the early Māori people. The name Mukamukaiti itself tells a story. “Muka” refers to the inner flax fibres, a valuable resource for weaving and making ropes. “Iti” means small, hinting at the abundance of smaller flax plants found along the stream banks. Imagine the Māori, generations ago, harvesting these fibres, transforming them into sturdy ropes and beautiful garments.
