What secrets does Muk Yu Chau hold? This unassuming islet, part of Hong Kong’s breathtaking landscape, whispers tales of a unique musical tradition. Muk Yu Chau itself may not be the birthplace of muk’yu, but the story of Uncle Ng, a master of this southern Chinese narrative song, connects us to its essence. Muk’yu, a captivating art form, weaves stories of history, folklore, and personal experiences. It thrived in Toisan County, Guangdong Province, where Uncle Ng honed his skills as a child. Imagine him, a young boy in the fields, his voice rising in song, echoing the tales of his ancestors.

Muk’yu is traditionally sung a cappella, often in the Toisan dialect, a language that resonated in the Chinatowns of America before 1965. The songs are fluid, adaptable, their rhyming verses open to improvisation, each performance a unique creation. Uncle Ng carried this tradition with him when he emigrated to New York in 1979. He continued to sing, his voice a bridge between his homeland and his new life, sharing muk’yu on street corners and in parks, bringing the heart of Toisan to the bustling city.

His dedication to preserving this art form did not go unnoticed. In 1992, Uncle Ng, now a symbol of cultural resilience, received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He even composed a song for the occasion, “Song for Receiving the Fellowship in Washington, D.C.,” expressing his joy and gratitude, his lyrics a testament to his artistry and the power of muk’yu to connect people across cultures. He cleverly incorporated lines wishing promotions for the chairperson and officials present.

Even though Muk Yu Chau may not have echoed with Uncle Ng’s voice directly, his journey reflects the spirit of muk’yu, a tradition that continues to inspire and connect communities. His story reminds us of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It encourages us to seek out those hidden melodies and narratives that enrich our understanding of the world. As we gaze at Muk Yu Chau, let us remember Uncle Ng, the master of muk’yu, and the enduring power of song.
