A beacon of faith and resilience, Mt. Nebo Baptist Church has witnessed over a century and a half of history unfold. Established in 1867 on land donated by Mr. Rickets, Mt. Nebo was founded on the principles of unity, worship, and mutual support within the African American community. The church’s first pastor, Reverend P. F. Fitzgerald, was a testament to this community spirit. Mt. Nebo supported his education, and he, in turn, dedicated his life to serving the church. He led the development of the deacon’s ministry, Sunday school, and even organized a 25-cent march to raise funds for the very building that stands before you today. Under Reverend Fitzgerald’s 44-year leadership, Mt. Nebo flourished. A trustee board, missionary ministry, and women’s ministry were all established during his tenure. He held true to his promise to preach at Mt. Nebo his entire life. After Reverend Fitzgerald’s passing, Reverend William Thomas led the congregation for seven years. He was followed by Reverend J. B. Rather, who served for 29 years. Reverend Rather further enriched Mt. Nebo’s musical landscape by organizing the senior and junior choirs. Several pastors followed, each contributing to Mt. Nebo’s growth. Reverend Clarence Jones served for one year, then Reverend R. R. Wilkinson for six years, and Reverend David E. Gordon for eighteen. It was during Reverend Gordon’s time that Youth Sunday was established, a heating system was installed, and the current church building was erected. This new sanctuary, completed in 1978, was built to accommodate the growing congregation. After Reverend Gordon, Reverend Joseph B. Fields, Jr. served for over 32 years, and currently, Pastor Damion T. Batts continues the legacy of leadership. Across the street from the current sanctuary stands the original Mt. Nebo building. Preserved in mint condition, it serves as a poignant reminder of the church’s rich history and its role in the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail. From its humble beginnings, Mt. Nebo Baptist Church has remained a cornerstone of faith, love, and community.
