Whispers of a hermit’s life drift from these stones. This is Mr Murphy’s Hut a relic of a fascinating past. Standing before you are the weathered remains of a stone cabin. It was built by William Andrew Murphy an Irishman who chose a solitary life in the Blue Mountains early in the 20th century. He arrived around 1913 a man of mystery his reasons for seeking seclusion unknown.

Mr Murphy wasn’t just a hermit though. He was a keen observer of nature. He befriended the local wildlife. Wallabies possums and a multitude of birds flocked to his hut. They depended on him for food. Sundays were special. Tourists would visit Mr Murphy’s Hut. He’d feed the animals creating a spectacle like a miniature zoo. This gentle giant was also a craftsman. He made brooms from local shrubs even inventing a machine to help. Unfortunately his brooms were so poorly made that a second broom was needed to sweep up the mess. He also dabbled in fortune-telling though the specifics remain a secret.

Mr Murphy’s life wasn’t without its challenges. A bushfire around 1918-1919 destroyed his hut. Miraculously he survived finding refuge under a waterfall. Neighbors rebuilt his home but he never fully recovered. His health declined. He eventually left Hat Hill. He was taken care of by friends the Drane family in Kogarah. He died there in 1927 at the age of 81. His grave in Woronora Cemetery was recently restored by the Drane family.

Mr Murphy’s legacy lives on. His story is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Australian landscape and the unique individuals who found solace within it. The remnants of Mr Murphy’s Hut stand as a poignant reminder of a life lived differently a testament to a man who chose solitude yet touched many lives through his gentle nature and unique connection with the Australian bush. The tale of Mr Murphy is more than just a story. It’s a captivating glimpse into a simpler time a time of hermits and wildlife a time woven into the very fabric of the Blue Mountains.
