“What’s that?” You ask, squinting at the seemingly level ground stretching across the moat. It doesn’t look like a bridge, does it? You’re right! It’s not the kind of bridge you’d expect. You’re standing at the Mozes Bridge, near Fort de Roovere, in the Netherlands. It’s a unique structure, designed to blend in with the water and landscape, leaving no visible trace of its presence from afar.

The architects, RO&AD, wanted to preserve the historical integrity of the old defensive moat. Building a typical bridge would have been unsightly and disrupted the aesthetic of the area. So, they came up with a clever solution, an “invisible” bridge.

Imagine walking on a path through the moat that seamlessly merges with the ground and water. When you get closer, you see the path starts to slant downwards, opening up like a narrow trench leading to the gate of the Fort. It’s almost like the waters parted, allowing you to pass through. The bridge is made entirely of waterproof wood and EPDM foil, blending into the surrounding landscape like a natural part of the moat. It’s a masterpiece of modern design and engineering, harmoniously balancing form and functionality.

This bridge is a tribute to the biblical story of Moses, splitting the Red Sea to guide his people. Standing here, you get a hint of that miracle, as the water surrounds you on both sides of the bridge. So, why don’t you take a walk on the Mozes Bridge and discover the magic for yourself?
