Perched atop a plateau extension of Mount York, the village of Mount Victoria beckons. Mount Victoria isn’t just a pretty face in the Blue Mountains. It holds a story as winding and captivating as the Great Western Highway that leads you here. Originally known as One Tree Hill, marked as such on an 1834 map by Surveyor General Sir Thomas Mitchell, Mount Victoria’s identity evolved with the arrival of the railway in 1868. The railway station marked a pivotal moment. The village became known as Mount Victoria, solidified when the first post office opened in 1876. Before the railway, the area had a different life. A toll bar operated just east of the present town, back in 1849, known as Broughton’s Waterhole Toll Bar. Imagine the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, their springs (or lack thereof) dictating the toll fee! The railway transformed Mount Victoria into a haven for Sydney’s elite. Private schools flourished, transforming the village into a prestigious hill station retreat. Mount Victoria boasts a rich architectural tapestry. The Imperial Hotel, built in 1878, stands as a testament to its continuous operation under the same name. St Peter’s Anglican Church, a sandstone edifice completed in 1874, holds the distinction of being the oldest Christian church in the Blue Mountains. The Toll House, erected in 1849, whispers tales of a bygone era. It is one of only two surviving toll houses in New South Wales. The Gatekeeper’s Cottage and the Mount Victoria Post Office, add to the historical charm. Today, Mount Victoria offers stunning views of the Kanimbla Valley. Enjoy bushwalks or simply relax and soak in the atmosphere. Mount Victoria remains a small town. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner.
