In 1922, a small storefront on Main Street held a powerful dream. That dream became Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. The church’s journey began on September 27th. A group of believers, led by Missionary N. W. King, gathered. They laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of faith in the community. Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church’s mission was clear from the start: “Take the Word of God to the People of God, through the Spirit of God so that the people of God will look like the Son of God.” They aimed to reach those in need of hope and healing. Their vision echoed a powerful prayer, “Thy Kingdom Come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.” Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church sought to bring the divine into the everyday. The church’s early days were led by Reverend P.R. Smith. Under his guidance, the congregation grew. They even moved to a new location at the corner of LaSalle and Oregon Streets. The church continued to grow under the leadership of Reverend J.P. Bouler, starting in April 1937. Then, in 1941, Reverend W.J. Glover became the third pastor, continuing the legacy of growth. Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church saw more changes in leadership. Reverend L.B. Bradford took the helm in 1950, serving for five years. In 1954, Reverend T.J. James began his long tenure as the fifth pastor. His leadership lasted over three decades. Reverend James’s vision significantly impacted Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. He guided the church to grow spiritually, numerically, and financially. His influence resonated far beyond the church walls. It reached the community, state, and even national levels. Even after his retirement in 1988, his impact was still felt. Following Reverend James’s retirement, Reverend Harvey Nichols served as interim pastor. During this time, the church purchased a new parsonage on Grace Street. This replaced the older residence on Pine Street. Then, in 1989, Reverend Bernard K. Jackson, Sr. became the sixth pastor of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. During his time, new ministries formed, and the church acquired more properties. After Pastor Jackson’s passing, Ministers William Cade and Danny Williamson stepped in. They, along with the Deacons Ministry, ensured Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church continued to thrive. In 1996, Thomas Devoe Leonard became the current pastor. Under his leadership, the church continues to grow and prosper. Renovations and improvements to the church building have also been made. The congregation continues its mission of being a beacon of hope in West Tampa. One key initiative is the “Manna House” Ministry. It provides food and support to the local community. As Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church celebrates over 100 years, its story is one of resilience, faith, and community impact.
