In 1863, newly freed men and women established Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. This was a place where they could worship freely. The church quickly became a cornerstone of Tampa’s Black community. Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is known as “The Freedom Church”. Notable figures like Harriet Tubman were members of the AME Zion Church. Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church stands near the vibrant Ybor City Historic District. This area is known for its arts and entertainment. Over the years, Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church has been a beacon of hope and resilience. In 2010, the church celebrated its 147th anniversary. That same year, they hosted the South Florida AME Zion Annual Conference. It was a testament to their enduring presence in the community. For a time, St. Paul AME Church held services at Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. This happened after St. Paul’s historic building fell into disrepair. It shows how Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church has served as a support system for other congregations. Mount Sinai African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church continues to welcome all of God’s children. They embrace people regardless of race, color, sex, or nationality. It reflects their commitment to inclusivity and unity.
