Time to unravel the story behind the Mount Parker RSSR Station. This radar station plays a crucial role in Hong Kong’s air traffic control. It helps ensure flight safety.

The Mount Parker RSSR Station stands as a testament to technological advancement. Its purpose is to maximize airspace capacity. The current radar replaced an older model in 2003. The original radar was installed in 1978. It served the former Hong Kong International Airport at Kai Tak. For over 25 years, it provided primary surveillance. It covered 200 nautical miles.

Why was the old radar replaced? It was due to its age and the difficulty in finding spare parts. The new Route Surveillance Radar has superior performance. Its stability, reliability, and accuracy are much better. It also improves target detection in bad weather.

The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr. Albert Lam, spoke at the launch ceremony. He highlighted the new radar’s advanced technology and design. Even a typhoon couldn’t stop the project. Engineers completed it on time. This shows their dedication.

What exactly is a PSR? It’s a radio detection system. It gives air traffic controllers information. This includes the range and bearing of aircraft. It displays this data as a blip on the radar screen. The system detects signals reflected from aircraft. It does not rely on transponders on the aircraft.

Notice the large dome? This is a radome that protects the radar antenna. It is 9.7 meters high and 13.7 meters wide. The radome is 15 meters in diameter. This allows the radar system to operate continuously. It works in all weather conditions, even typhoons.

During the radar replacement, the station was renovated. Upgrades included the standby generator. They also upgraded the fuel tank and power supply system. A new fire fighting system was installed. These renovations ensure the new RSR can operate for another 20 to 25 years.

Before the new RSR was accepted, it underwent rigorous testing. The flight inspection team checked everything. They certified that the system worked properly.

This 60 million dollar project shows Hong Kong’s commitment to air safety. Alenia Marconi Systems of Italy supplied the new radar. Chinney Alliance Engineering Limited is their local representative.

So, next time you see a plane overhead, remember the Mount Parker RSSR Station. It quietly works. It helps keep our skies safe. It’s a vital piece of Hong Kong’s infrastructure. It stands tall on Mount Parker.
