Beneath a sprawling blackjack oak tree, a vision took root. Mount Olive Baptist Church, a beacon of faith and community, traces its origins back to this very spot. Dr. William Harris, a man of foresight, paused here in the late 1870s while waiting for his son. He envisioned a church rising on this land, a testament to his belief. He shared this dream with his son, expressing his wish to be buried beneath the same oak. In 1879, Dr. Harris passed away and was laid to rest under the tree, his final resting place marking the future site of Mount Olive Baptist Church. Initially, the faithful gathered under a simple brush arbor for worship. Soon, a log church replaced the makeshift shelter. Led by Elder D.T. McLeod and J.T. Sparkman, the congregation grew. On October 7, 1882, Mount Olive Baptist Church officially joined the South Florida Baptist Association, solidifying its place in the community. Time marched on, and the log structure gave way to a sturdier board building. In 1946, the church decided to build a more permanent block structure. This new building was dedicated on April 4, 1954, marking a significant step in Mount Olive’s journey. Later, more rooms were added, along with a fellowship hall. These additions were completed in time for the Centennial Celebration on October 7, 1982, a testament to the church’s enduring presence. Mount Olive Baptist Church has continued to adapt to the needs of its community. A new building was constructed in 2001 and dedicated on May 5, 2002. This continuous evolution reflects the church’s commitment to serving Polk City. For over 137 years, Mount Olive Baptist Church has stood as a symbol of faith. It continues to serve and inspire the community, a living legacy of Dr. Harris’s vision under the blackjack oak.
