Twenty-six Christians sought fellowship. They left Rehoboth Baptist Church. They founded Mount Moriah Baptist Church in 1885. The name itself suggests a place of profound spiritual significance.

The church’s first services were held in a home on 1220 2nd Street SW. Imagine Brother Sampson and Sister Fannie Thomas opening their doors. They welcomed the first twenty-six members. These included John and Thomas Delaney. James Eglan and Walter Epps were also among them. The list also featured Susie Hailstorks and Harriet Howard. Many others joined them in their devotion. Reverend Henry Scott served as the first pastor. He organized the first Sunday school. It had just twelve students.
The congregation grew quickly. They needed a larger space. They moved to 3rd and Van Streets SW. Later in 1891 they relocated again to a new building on 2nd Street between M and N Streets SW. This building was remodeled in 1900 and paid off in 1906. This showed the financial success of the congregation.
Reverend James Clinton Dent became the second pastor. His leadership brought further growth. The church’s success led to yet another move. This time to a grand edifice at 3rd and L Streets SW in 1924. The church remained here for 34 years. This building was a landmark in the city.
However city redevelopment forced a move. The church sold its beloved building. In 1958 they began a new chapter. They moved to their current location at 17th & East Capitol Streets NE. This shows the adaptability of the community.
Mount Moriah Baptist Church has had many influential pastors. Dr James Harvey Randolph served for 50 years. His vision shaped the church. He also encouraged missionary work. Reverend Robert Gilmore Williams Sr continued this legacy. He implemented many improvements and expansions. Reverend Dr Edward A Hailes Sr focused on youth and community outreach. Reverend Dr Lucius M Dalton currently leads the church. He continues the tradition of growth and service.
